🎶Elementary Band 2026-27🎶

The Lakeview Elementary PTSA is excited to offer a Band enrichment program open to the upcoming 4th and 5th graders.

Thanks to community support and feedback, we can make this opportunity available to our students.  Students will learn to play a band instrument and perform music together in an ensemble with their peers.

Concerts will be held throughout the year to celebrate their musical progress and growth.

The program will be held before/after school at Lakeview Elementary from October 5, 2026 through June 9, 2027.

Please note:

1. This program is run by the Lakeview Elementary PTSA

2. We need to charge a fee to make this program possible

3. You will need to provide your student transportation to/from the program

4. A small number of volunteers is required.

Our Band enrichment program depends on early commitment now!

To ensure we can run the program in the 2026-27 school year, we need at least 15 students signed up by June 12 for next year's program.

If we don’t reach this number, the program may not be able to continue.

Please sign up now by clicking here, to secure this wonderful musical opportunity for your child!

Why play in Band?
  1. It’s a team activity – Cooperation, commitment, accountability are valued and necessary.
  2. Music is a universal language – Music communicates emotion & lifts the spirit.
  3. Teens involved in music-related activities score higher on English, math, and science exams than their nonmusical peers1
  4. Go on field trips! Travel in MS, HS, college, and beyond
  5. College scholarships available for students that play through high school (especially on high-demand instruments!) $$$
  6. It’s more than a class… it’s a community!
  7. Most of all… it’s FUN!!!

The Program

Band is for all students interested in learning to play a Band instrument. Each student meets two times a week through the year and performs in 2-3 concerts.

  • Beginning Band
    • 4th OR 5th graders that are brand new to playing.
    • We start from the very beginning – instrument assembly, holding, reading music – no experience necessary!!
  • Intermediate Band
    • 5th graders that previously played last year
    • Reviews concepts from last year (~first month), then quickly moves to new, more challenging music

5th graders in Beginning Band may ‘graduate’ up to Intermediate Band sooner to be with their peers. This usually happens at the semester, but can happen sooner with enough hard work.

Beginning Band will be instructed by Sallie Baldwin, an experienced teacher who taught Band, Choir, and Orchestra for 15 years in Arizona public schools and was the Educational Director for 5 years at the Seattle Music Partners.  She currently teaches private lessons, directs the Orquesta Northwest World Youth Orchestra, and gives back to the community through multiple teaching and conducting engagements.

Intermediate Band will be instructed by Cameron Stedman, the Band Director at Kirkland Middle School who teaches Beginning, Cadet, Concert, Jazz Band, and more.  Mr. Stedman was recognized as Outstanding Educator in 2021 by the Kirkland Middle School PTSA, again in 2024 by the Kirkland Rotary.

Weekly Schedule

The program will be held at Lakeview Elementary School.  Students may be asked to bring their own music stands and help set up/put away chairs for each class.

Beginning Band - Before School from 8:05-9:05 am

  • Monday: Whole Band Ensemble
  • Tuesday: Woodwind
  • Wednesday: Brass Day & Percussion
  • No class: school holidays, and 5 days to be determined in the Fall

We may shift instruments between Tuesday and Wednesday depending on numbers.

Intermediate Band - After School (Lakeview students will have time to eat a snack before class.)

  • Monday 4:15-5:15 pm : Whole Band Ensemble
  • Wednesday 3:10-4:10 pm : Whole Band Ensemble
  • No class: school holidays, and 5 days to be determined in the Fall

(Exact start and end times will be set in September with the Lakeview Elementary School.  If Lakeview Elementary School is closed, class will be cancelled.  If the instructor is unavailable, or is sick, class will also be cancelled.  If Lakeview Elementary School has a delayed start, Beginning Band will be cancelled.  If Lakeview Elementary School has a half day, Intermediate Band will be cancelled.)

Instruments

Students select and provide their own instrument for Band.  Instruments can be rented or purchased from several local music stores.  They also need to purchase a lesson book that will be used for classes and concerts.

The “big 5” (best for beginners)

  • Flute (woodwind)
  • Clarinet (woodwind)
  • Trumpet (brass)
  • Trombone (brass)
  • Baritone/Euphonium (brass)

Instruments that can be in elementary band, but require permission from the instructor (these take extra practice/dedication to pull off):

  • Oboe (woodwind)
  • Alto Saxophone (We strongly recommend starting on the clarinet for 4th graders due to size air support.) (woodwind)
  • French Horn (brass)
  • Percussion (Mallets & Snare Drum – 4th grade spends half of the year on each, 5th grade both switched between regularly)

5th Grade Only

  • Bass Clarinet (after starting on clarinet)
  • Tenor Saxophone (after starting on alto)
  • Tuba (after starting on euphonium/trombone)

Transportation

The Band enrichment program will be held at Lakeview Elementary School.  Transportation will not be provided to and from the program.

For Beginning Band, you will be responsible for getting your student to Lakeview and then to their Elementary School on time for the start of the school day.  Lakeview students will stay at Band until the start of the day.

For Intermediate Band after school, you will be responsible for picking up on time at the end of the class.  Lakeview students will be supervised by the chaperone after school and before Band starts.

Chaperones and Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer chaperones are critical to making this opportunity possible.  A chaperone is required for each class throughout the year to make sure students are signed in and signed out.  All chaperones must attend the preparation call in September.

As a Lakeview PTSA program, chaperones must become Lakeview PTSA members and have a current LWSD approved volunteer status.  Apply to be a LWSD volunteer here:  https://www.lwsd.org/volunteer

We also have a small group of dedicated parents who run the program.  If you want to join us, let us know!

Program Fee

The program fee will be $722 for ~56 classes, which is ~$13 per class.

This is an incredible opportunity as private music lessons can start at $60/hour and many enrichment classes are over $25/class.

Families who need financial assistance or a payment plan, please reach out!  For students attending Lakeview Elementary, the Lakeview Elementary PTSA offers scholarships as well as discounts for those who chaperone.

  1. Parents/Guardians sign up, pay a deposit that will go towards the program fee
  2. Before the end of June, Lakeview PTSA shares if we have sign ups to run the program. (If we do not have sufficient students signed up, we discuss options with interested parents.)

Assuming we have the minimum number of students to hold the program, in September:

  1. Signups will open again for additional students.
  2. Students will confirm their instrument selection.
  3. Participants new to Band will need to join a parent/guardian meeting.
  4. All participants will sign a code of conduct.
  5. Parents/Guardians pay before classes start using a credit card or via check.  Credit card fees may apply.

Program Refund Policy

A prorated refund, including the deposit, will be awarded only when:

  1. A student is injured and is unable to participate (a signed physician’s note required).
  2. A family moves beyond a 50-mile radius of the program.

Behavior and Discipline

Children are expected to behave courteously and attentively.  Students who are not behaving appropriately will be written up and parents will be contacted.  Students asked to leave a class twice for disciplinary reasons will not be allowed to return.  Refunds will not be issued in disciplinary cases.

Students attending Band after school are expected to be picked up on time at the end of class. We reserve the right to pull students from the class without refund if the volunteer chaperone is inconvenienced with late pick-ups.
