This opportunity is open to all 4th and 5th grade students.

  1. All participants will need to join a parent/guardian meeting as well as sign a code of conduct.
  2. Parents/Guardians pay before classes start using a credit card or via check.  Credit card fees may apply.

Students will learn to play a band instrument and perform music together in an ensemble with their peers.

Students who participated in Beginning Band last year will have the opportunity to continue their musical journey in the next stage with Intermediate Band.

Concerts will be held throughout the year to celebrate their musical progress and growth.

The program will be held before/after school at Lakeview Elementary from Oct 6, 2025, through June 5, 2026.

Please note:

  1. This program is run by the Lakeview Elementary PTSA.
  2. We need to charge a fee to make this program possible.
  3. You will need to provide your student transportation to/from the program.
  4. A small number of volunteers are required.

Enrollment is open. Limited spots available — don’t miss out!

The Band enrichment program tries to align to the current Elementary Band experience.

Intermediate Band will be instructed by Cameron Stedman, the Band Director at Kirkland Middle School (and our current Elementary Band Director!).

Beginning Band will be instructed by Sallie Baldwin, an experienced teacher who previously taught Band, Choir, and Orchestra for 15 years in Arizona public schools and was the Educational Director for 5 years at the Seattle Music Partners.  She currently teaches private lessons, directs the Orquesta Northwest World Youth Orchestra, and gives back to the community through multiple teaching and conducting engagements.

Each student will meet two times a week for 32 weeks.  Each student will have ~56 classes and 2-3 concerts.

The program will have two levels:

  • Beginning Band

    • 4th OR 5th graders that are brand new to playing.

    • We start from the very beginning – instrument assembly, holding, reading  music – no experience necessary!!

  • Intermediate Band

    • 5th graders that previously played last year

    • Reviews concepts from last year (~first month), then quickly move to new, more challenging music

    • 5th graders in Beginning Band may ‘graduate’ up to Intermediate Band to be with their peers. This usually happens at the semester, but can happen sooner with enough hard work!

WEEKLY SCHEDULE

The program will be held at Lakeview Elementary School.

We plan to use the Music room. This means students will be asked to bring their own music stands and help set up/put away chairs for each class.

  • Monday: Whole Band Ensemble
    Tuesday: Clarinets
Wednesday: Brass & Percussion & Flute
No class: school holidays, Oct 22, Oct 27, Dec 8, Feb 2, and Mar 2
  • We may shift instruments between Tuesday and Wednesday depending on numbers.

Intermediate Band - AFTER SCHOOL

  • Monday 4:15-5:15 pm*: Whole Band Ensemble
  • Wednesday 3:10-4:10pm*: Whole Band Ensemble
  • No class: School holidays, one Wednesday a month. Specific dates to be set in September.
  • After school ends (Monday at 3:55 pm/Wednesday at 2:25 pm), Lakeview students will head to the music room to set up and have a light snack from home before class begins.

For Beginning and Intermediate Band: If Lakeview Elementary School is closed, Band class will be cancelled. Class will also be cancelled if the instructor is sick or unavailable. In the event of a delayed school start, Beginning Band will be cancelled. The week of June 8 is reserved for makeup classes.

INSTRUMENTS

Students select and provide their own instrument for Band.  Instruments can be rented or purchased from several local music stores.  They also need to purchase a lesson book that will be used for classes and concerts.

The “big 5” (best for beginners)

  • Flute (woodwind)
  • Clarinet (woodwind)
  • Trumpet (brass)
  • Trombone (brass)
  • Baritone/Euphonium (brass)

Instruments that can be in elementary band, but require permission from the instructor (these take extra practice/dedication to pull off):

  • Oboe (woodwind)
  • Alto Saxophone (We strongly recommend starting on the clarinet for 4th graders due to size air support.) (woodwind)
  • French Horn (brass)
  • Percussion (Mallets & Snare Drum – 4th grade spends half of the year on each, 5th grade both switched between regularly)

5th Grade Only

  • Bass Clarinet (after starting on clarinet)
  • Tenor Saxophone (after starting on alto)
  • Tuba (after starting on euphonium/trombone)

SUPPLIES

1 ) An Instrument:
For your student to be successful in band this year, make sure they have access to a good, working instrument. This includes access to any and all applicable accessories such as extra reeds, cleaning cloth, cork grease, valve and slide oil, tuning slide grease, and sticks/mallets.

Instruments and supplies can be rented from Music & ArtsMetropolitan MusicTed Brown, or Kennelly Keys.  If you’ve been playing for a while and you’re looking to buy an instrument outright, it is advised to consult me or a private teacher first. Avoid “too good to be true” prices, and purchase from somewhere that will let you demo the instrument first. The materials list in the band handbook lists reputable brands for each instrument.

PERCUSSIONISTS: Percussionist will need to have access to and bring both a snare drum and bell kit to rehearsal.

2 ) Method book:
Playing out of a method book provides structure with sequential, numbered, songs and exercises intended to build technique and fundamentals on your instrument over time. When working from a method book, most instruments play the same part at the same time, just transposed for their instrument group, which allow us to play together more easily. It also allows students of different instruments to reach out and use each other as resources, or for small group practice. Purchasing the book new will also grant you access to online recordings and digital resources that can aid students at home if they’re ever stuck.
The books that will be used this year are as follows:
·        Beginning, Intermediate Band = Tradition of Excellence – Book 1 by Pearson/Nowlin
**MAKE SURE TO PURCHASE THE CORRECT BOOK FOR YOUR STUDENT’S INSTRUMENT! i.e. “for flute” or “for B-flat trumpet”. Note the book number (1, 2, or 3)!

3 ) A music stand (to be used at home and brought to school for class):
Having a music stand at home promotes good posture and allows the student to have a dedicated, distraction-free space to read their music from. Here’s an inexpensive example.

Students in Intermediate Band may bring a snack to eat after school and before class starts.

TRANSPORTATION

The Band enrichment program will be held at Lakeview Elementary School. Transportation will not be provided to and from the program.

For Beginning Band, you will be responsible for getting your student to Lakeview. Students will stay at Band class until the start of the school day.

For Intermediate Band, you will be responsible to pick up your student on time at the end of the band class. We reserve the right to pull students from the class without refund if the volunteer chaperone is inconvenienced with late pick-ups. Lakeview students will be supervised by the chaperone after school and before Band starts.

CHAPERONES AND VOLUNTEER OPORTUNITIES

Volunteer chaperones are critical to making this opportunity possible.  A volunteer chaperone is required for each class from each participating elementary school throughout the year to make sure students are signed in and signed out.  All chaperones will need to attend the preparation call.

As a Lakeview PTSA program, chaperones must become Lakeview Elementary PTSA members even if your child does not attend Lakeview Elementary.  Chaperones must also have a current district approved volunteer status. (Please go to https://www.lwsd.org/volunteer to apply.)

Sign up here to chaperone for a class:
